My Dilemma

Hello everyone! My name is Shalene McGowan and I have been inspired to publicly talk to you about the dilemma I had, which will center on the subject of diabetes. I am choosing to focus on diabetes because I have been affected indirectly by it and I must say I did not enjoy it at all. You see, my husband suffered from diabetes and I almost lost him and the journey from trying to manage it till now has been hectic. For starters, my husband who is now 51 years old suffered from diabetes 2 years ago and it was not until several months prior to September 6th 2013 that I started noticing changes with him. He started acting different with him being very irritable and sleepy all the time. At this time, I did not know that he was diabetic, which is why I did not think much of it. In addition to exhibiting the above mentioned, he also had no energy and didn’t want to do any strenuous activity. Whenever he would eat, he would try to sleep right afterwards and this made driving scary because he was prone to sleep any time!
There are times when he also exhibited flu or pneumonia like symptoms at all times and they made him weak and he lost a lot of weight in the process. My turning point that made me think that something was definitely up is when he started vomiting so bad that when I rushed him to the ER, the machines could not even read his blood since it was so thick! He was then rushed to Baptist Hospital in Little Rock where they proceeded to hook IV drips in both his arms where he also spent a week in ICU. The doctors successfully diagnosed the condition and they told us he was experiencing DKA which comes about when the body becomes acidic and starts attacking itself.
I later came to know that it is a miracle that he is still alive because he actually was suffering from the most severe form of Diabetes and those who don’t catch the condition early do not live to tell the story. After hospitalization the heavy medication he was put under made him feel awful and after researching on other natural alternatives, I found that getting him on a healthy diet, light exercise together with proper vitamins and minerals would actually work out for him. It did and he eventually went off his meds entirely and guess what, he feels much better now! I now want to sensitize people on the importance of living a healthy lifestyle since this will enable them avoid popping in medication that will eventually harm their body.
